Introduction

Status: draft.

The central hypothesis

Humanity has accumulated thousands of years of moral, philosophical, spiritual, political, scientific, and social knowledge. That knowledge is real, but it is fragmented — locked inside religions that don't cite each other, philosophies that talk past each other, sciences that rarely speak to either, and institutions built without reference to any of them.

This book's hypothesis is that a useful, testable, non-dogmatic framework for civilization can be built by:

  1. Extracting the most useful principles from traditions across

cultures and eras.

  1. Comparing them against each other to find convergence and genuine

disagreement.

  1. Testing them against modern evidence from psychology, economics,

history, political science, neuroscience, ecology, and systems science.

  1. Identifying their failure modes — the specific ways each principle,

taken too far or applied without its original constraints, produces harm.

  1. Assembling what survives into a practical framework for improving

human wellbeing, collective intelligence, institutional quality, ecological sustainability, technological development, and civilization- scale cooperation.

We call the method, in short:

> Tradition proposes. Reason examines. Evidence tests. Human dignity > constrains. Outcomes inform. Wisdom evolves.

Each clause is doing real work:

not as final authorities. A teaching earns consideration because it survived long enough to be worth examining, not because it is old.

internal consistency, scope, the conditions under which it was formed.

it. Where it doesn't, that absence is stated rather than papered over.

individual human worth, however good its aggregate outcomes look on paper. This is a normative commitment, not a discovery — see the intellectual rule below.

societies actually try them, not only by how they sound.

revised as better evidence and better arguments arrive.

What this book is not

no claim to revelation.

compared, not ranked by truth-of-origin.

traditions is interesting precisely because the traditions remain distinct; the goal is a shared operating layer beneath cultural diversity, not a replacement for it.

central method of this book (see 01_human_problem/05_the_moral_codex_hypothesis.md) is distinguishing what a text recommends from what it merely depicts.

What this book refuses to do

Two moves are banned throughout, because both are common and both are invalid:

or ubiquity is not evidence of its factual or moral correctness.

what happens, what causes what, what the probabilities and tradeoffs are. It cannot, by itself, tell us what to value. That step is normative, and this book tries to make every normative step visible rather than smuggled in behind a citation.

In practice this means every chapter that touches values keeps three questions apart:

institutions should we build?

The civilizational question

Most modern institutions were optimized, implicitly or explicitly, for economic growth or political stability. This book asks a different question:

> What rules would we design if the objective were not merely economic > growth or political stability, but the long-term flourishing and > increasing intelligence of humanity?

That means optimizing — simultaneously, not sequentially — for human wellbeing, physical and psychological health, intellectual development, freedom, dignity, social trust, justice, ecological sustainability, technological progress, resilience, creativity, scientific discovery, cooperation, peaceful conflict resolution, intergenerational continuity, and planetary-scale coordination. GDP appears nowhere on that list because it is an input to some of these things and not a stand-in for any of them.

Type-I civilization

The Kardashev scale gives us a memorable technological benchmark — a Type-I civilization harnesses roughly all the energy reaching its home planet — but technological capacity alone is not the point of this book. A civilization that could capture planetary-scale energy while still resolving disputes by force, hiding truth for advantage, and treating half its own members as disposable would not be a mature civilization; it would be a dangerous one. Part 11 develops an expanded scale — Type 0 through Type I — that tracks social and epistemic maturity alongside energy capture, and states plainly that these subdivisions are this book's own conceptual scale, not an official extension of Kardashev's.

How the argument is built

Parts 1–3 establish the problem and survey the raw material: what makes civilization-building hard (Part 1), what specific traditions actually claim (Part 2), and what modern science has learned about flourishing, cognition, and cooperation (Part 3). Part 4 introduces this book's central organizing concept, civilizational intelligence — a society's capacity to perceive reality accurately and correct its own errors — which recurs through everything after it. Parts 5–10 apply the method domain by domain: governance, economics, justice, education, ecology, technology. Part 11 lays out the Type-I transition. Part 12, the Codex, condenses everything into a set of standardized principles. Parts 13–15 translate principles into institutions, stress-test them against failure scenarios, and sketch paths from philosophy to policy. Part 16 closes with the choice this book argues we actually face.
